Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

A Practical Approach to Change

CBT is an umbrella term that covers many different therapeutic approaches that are primarily behaviourally focused.

It is often misunderstood as simply "changing negative thoughts," however there is enormous scope within CBT to tailor therapy to the individual.

Thoughts can be very difficult to change directly. Behaviour, on the other hand, can often be changed immediately. One of the strengths of CBT is that changes in behaviour frequently lead to changes in thoughts, emotions and confidence over time.

CBT encourages people to test things in the real world rather than simply talking about them.

Historically, some forms of therapy involved discussing thoughts, feelings, and childhood experiences for many sessions, sometimes years, without always resulting in practical changes. CBT takes a more direct and practical approach.

How Shannon Uses CBT

Shannon uses CBT to help people create meaningful changes in their everyday lives.

Particular techniques he may draw upon include:

  • Exposure Therapy

  • Activity Scheduling

  • Cognitive Reframing

  • Acceptance and Commitment approaches

  • Stress Reduction techniques

These approaches can be particularly useful for people experiencing addiction, ADHD, anxiety, unhealthy coping patterns, and difficulties with motivation or follow-through.

The goal is not simply to understand problems, but to develop practical strategies that help to create lasting change.
